More than two decades ago Piaggio Aero Industries (Italy) started producing turboprops R.180 Avanti, which immediately won the sympathy of passengers and popularity among air operators. The demand for "sky Ferraris" (as Italian turboprops are called by business aviation specialists) remains so high that with a capacity to produce up to 20 aircraft per year, Piaggio Aero Industries has at least 70 on its order list.

With the introduction of the updated P-180 called Avanti II in the first half of 2005, Italian engineers proved to the global aviation community that turboprops can still compete with jets in terms of their technical characteristics, and turboprops themselves as a type have great potential for development in the business aviation segment.

The Avanti II propulsion system, consisting of two PT6A-66B turboprops, generates about 1,700 horsepower, allowing the aircraft to reach a maximum cruise speed of 740 km/h, an outstanding result for a turboprop. The upgraded P-180 can travel 2,780 km without refueling, and has a practical ceiling of 12,500 m, an average of 25% higher than that of other turboprops. In terms of avionics the Italian turboprop is in no way inferior to modern business jets as it is equipped with the latest Pro Line 21 avionics suite by Rockwell Collins.

One of the main features of aircraft produced by Piaggio Aero Industries is their original appearance that stands out brightly against the background of classic turboprops. First of all it concerns the engines with the unusual placement of the pusher propellers, which are attached to the engine not at the front, but at the back. The Avanti II is unmistakably recognizable from afar, thanks to the additional nose wings at the front of the fuselage (a rarity for civil aviation). The so called "nose feathering" creates lift, which converts the rear horizontal stabilizer into another load bearing surface. As a result, the load on the wing is reduced by 34%, thereby reducing the wing size as well as reducing drag and increasing the ship's speed.

This method of increasing lift is called the "three bearing surfaces technology", which was created and patented by Piaggio Aero Industries. Its application led to the Avanti II's narrow main wing shape, whose drag is an order of magnitude lower than that of other aircraft with traditional drag propellers, since the push propeller does not create additional eddy currents. Moreover, the entire hull design is designed to maintain laminar flow over 30% of the aircraft's entire length and thus increase the lift of the aircraft.

The secret of the P-180's high aerodynamic streamlined fuselage lies in its skin. At first glance it may look like it's made of composite materials, but in fact the Avanti II's hull is 90% aluminum alloy. To achieve the perfect shape and smoothness, Piaggio Aero Industries patented a special method of assembling the hull from the outside in, during which the fuselage parts are fitted to each other and fixed with powerful vacuum suction cups. After that, a framework of stringers and ribs is attached to the inside of the skin. Thus, all connecting elements are inside the hull and it is completely smooth outside.

P-180 aircraft are assembled at Genoa (Italy) or Greenville (USA, South Carolina) plants, and their flight tests are also conducted either in Italy or in the USA.

All these technological innovations have resulted in improved performance of the Avanti II turboprop, which exceeds not only its classmates, but even business jets. For example, due to improved aerodynamics the P-180 consumes 1 kg of fuel per 3.4 km. For modern jets this amount of fuel is enough for 2 kilometers and for turboprop models - for 2.7 kilometers on average.

Perhaps today, the Avanti has no worthy rivals among turboprops. Most likely, only light jets can compete with it, such as the Raytheon Premier I and the Cessna Citation CJ2+.

The large size of the cabin of the new P-180, which, depending on the equipment, accommodates up to 9 passengers, also clearly distinguishes it from other business jets: with a cabin height of 1.75 m and width of 1.85 m only business jets of the upper medium segment have better performance.

Upgrading of the P-180 to the Avanti II led to a significant increase in its maximum takeoff and landing weight: from 5240 to 5465 kg and from 4965 to 5195 kg respectively. By business aviation standards, this means that the aircraft can carry two more passengers than its predecessor while maintaining the same fuel consumption.

However, the most significant changes have affected the cockpit, which now meets all modern and even predictable international aviation standards. The new integrated Pro Line 21 flight control system features three LCD displays, a universal radio station, a VHF course beacon, instrument landing system, rangefinder, radio compass, weather radar, airborne collision prevention and a ground collision warning system.

The Avanti II is certified to fly with one pilot, however most carriers prefer a two-person crew, as the technical capabilities of the aircraft are easier to realize when it is operated with four hands.

On the instrument panel, all the switches are located side by side in a logical sequence at the leading edge of the center console just before the throttles. After starting the engines the craft is ready to taxi in just 3-4 minutes. No matter what mode the aircraft is in, whether it's takeoff, cruise or approach, the pilot's displays clearly show all the necessary information - the location of the aircraft in the airspace, altitude and speed, the topography of the ground, as well as the boundaries of overflying countries, danger zones and routes. Based on these "cues," it is easy and pleasant to control the aircraft.

As you gain altitude, a warning tone sounds every thousand feet. When the autopilot is turned on, all the necessary information about the condition of the craft is displayed on the control light panel. Meanwhile, the turboprop behaves gently and linearly, and speed changes are so smooth and imperceptible that it gives the impression of flying in a jet plane.

To fully appreciate the flexibility and responsiveness of the Avanti II control system, during the flight test an algorithm for sudden course changes was practiced. Instead of a previously selected destination (Genoa Airport), the pilots chose a course to Albenga Airport, without having any terrain maps or landing approach diagrams with them. After changing the flight task, the avionics system allowed the pilots to download all requested electronic maps and charts, as well as data regarding the required radio frequencies. The aircraft quickly tracked the course beacon signal and started landing in Albenga.

According to the results of flight tests of the upgraded P-180, independent aviation experts concluded that even a pilot without special training can understand the intuitive and elaborate Avanti II avionics system on his own. The latest Pro Line 21 avionics allows pilots to confidently navigate even in unfamiliar conditions and keep the aircraft under full control. The only precondition for a successful flight is the coordinated work of the crew. That's why experts believe that for all its simplicity and intuitive clarity, the avionics system requires special training sessions with two Avanti II pilots at the same time.

For this reason, Piaggio Aero Industries regularly conducts training courses on an aircraft simulator at Flight Safety International (USA, Florida). In turn, Rockwell Collins holds a two-day Pro Line 21 system training course. In addition, each purchaser of the Avanti II is given a computerized version of the avionics training exercise package.
