The head of Fairchild Aerospace Corporation, Carl Albert, was well aware that the market had changed and made a revolutionary decision. He closed the design of the extended 48-seat variant of the Do 328-200 and concentrated all his energies on developing a variant of the aircraft with PW306B jet engines on pylons under the wings - the Do 328-300. The beginning of designing of the airliner called Do.328JET was announced in February 1997. Since that time, the aircraft of the German branch ceased to be called Do, in the press they are unofficially called FD.

The airplane had its wing strengthened due to heavier engines and its chord increased by 0.1 m due to the flaps. A thrust reverser is to be installed. For flights in Europe or regions where local rules make it unprofitable to operate heavy airliners, a version with a maximum takeoff weight of less than 15 tons is offered. The aircraft is designed for quick turnaround at airports: passengers leave the plane on the built-in gangway, while the other side is already loaded with catering. For luggage and cargo there is a rear hatch. Preparation for departure takes less than 20 minutes, all the places for aircraft maintenance by ground personnel are far enough away from the gangway and cargo hatches.

Avionics - from the integrated series "Primus 2000" from Honeywell includes a meteorological indicator "Primus 880", warning systems of danger of approaching the ground and the aircraft in the air. Installation of a pilot indicator at head level is possible, which improves conditions for takeoff and landing at night and in difficult weather conditions. Installation of jet engines increased maximum cruise speed from 620 to 740 km/h.

Roll-out of the 328JET was in December 1997 and the first flight was in January of the following year. Four aircraft took part in the certification tests and flew 1,560 hours, including 460 flights and demonstrations. The aircraft underwent a total of 950 flights and 200 ground test cycles.

The Type Certificate of the European Joint Airworthiness Administration (JAA) was obtained for the 328JET in July 1999 as a development of the turboprop version. The Type Certificate under the US Federal Aviation Regulations FAR-25 was received a week later. By this time, the aircraft had received 162 orders and options, including the business variant Envoi 3, at a total cost of $1.93 billion. The cost of the Do 328 upgrade program to the 328JET was less than $100 million; the price of the aircraft was about $11 million.

The 328JET's first customer was the U.S. airline Sky Sky Airlines, which ordered five aircraft and placed a request for ten more. The first two were delivered in August 1999. The company Shell Petroleum received the third serial plane. In September of the same year, the first 328JET was delivered to European airline Tyrolien Jet Service (Austria). By this time the company had received 175 orders and orders for 328JETs and a new 428JET

After the start of flight tests of the 328JET in May 1998, Fairchild Airspace and the Israeli IAI Corporation began to develop a 42/44-seat elongated version. The new aircraft with PW308 engines and the wing area increased by 30% was named 428JET. Its first flight was scheduled for 2001, while the certification completion and delivery were scheduled for 2002. The estimated price of the plane is $12.5 million.

The 328JET/428JET pair could give operators advantages in repair and maintenance, training of flight crews and ground personnel. At the 2000 Farnborough 2000 air show, Fairchild Airspace sold over 150 428JETs. And, quite unexpectedly, in August the company announced about ending the program and refocusing funds on other projects. This was said to be due to changes in the market.

And indeed, a "fresh" 40-seat Embraer ERJ-140 came to Farnborough. However, everyone knew about this competitor long time ago.

The 328JET is still the world's only mass-produced 32-seat passenger jet. It flies in the USA, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific. And in November of last year, Fairchild Airspace opened a representative office in China.

The successful launch of the jet firstborn paved the way for a new company project. In 1998, it unveiled plans for a completely new family of 50/70/90-seat 528JET/728JET/928JET regional jets powered by CF34-8D engines.
