In the early 1970s, the new Garrett TFE731 turbofan engine was created, with good fuel efficiency and low noise levels. As a result, it was possible to bring to market a new corporate aircraft - with better characteristics than its competitors. First bet on the new engine was made by Gates Learjet - one Learjet 25 was re-equipped with new engines, placing one TFE731-2 in the right nacelle and leaving the old engine on the left side. The first flight of the modified plane took place in January 1973. The second aircraft received two TFE731-2 engines and then the production version Learjet 35 made its maiden flight on 22nd August 1973. Compared to the Learjet 25 the new Learjet 35 and concurrent Learjet 36 had a fuselage extended by 0.33 m and wings of increased diameter by 1.22 m allowing the aircraft to carry a larger payload over longer distances. Two production versions of the aircraft received certification in the summer of 1974.
The Learjet 35 was designed to carry eight people, while its Learjet 35A variant had a greater takeoff weight and a number of modifications. The US Air Force and National Guard purchased 80 and four Learjet 35s as C-21As for use as medevac, staff transport and VIP aircraft respectively. The Air Force Command of several other countries purchased these aircraft for use as liaisons.
Learjet also developed a number of special military modifications. EC-35A - for use as an REMS aircraft and as a training aircraft for training of REMS specialists. The PC-35A was a maritime patrol plane equipped with a search radar with the antenna located in the fuselage fairing, high resolution TV system, forward vision infrared system, line infrared scanner, electronic warfare complex and magnetometer; two underwing hanger units, one under each wing console, could carry a payload up to 454 kg. Almost simultaneously with Bombardier LearJet 35 the same model Bombardier LearJet 36 appeared; it differed from the basic aircraft type by almost half-meter passenger cabin length and, besides that, increased fuel tanks enabled the airplane to cover almost 1 000 km more. Increased passenger cabin volume enabled to seat inside the aircraft more comfortably, however there was one weak point - it was not possible to take on board so much useful cargo, therefore in 1976 Bombardier LearJet 36A model was presented, which eliminated this drawback, and besides a modernized aircraft got also a new propulsion system.
